Our youngest pupils follow the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage (EYFS). At Collingwood Primary School we have decided to accept the invitation from the Department for Education to adopt the new version of the curriculum in the year 2020-21.
The framework is divided into 7 areas which are subdivided into 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs):
Communication and Language
Listening, Attention and Understanding
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
4. Managing Self
5. Building Relationships
6. Gross Motor Skills
7. Fine Motor Skills
9. Word Reading
12. Numerical Patterns
Understanding the World
13. Past and Present
14. People, Culture and Communities
15. The Natural World
Expressive Arts and Design
16. Creating with Material
17. Being Imaginative and Expressive
‘Characteristics of effective learning’ are also observed to find out the children’s preferred learning styles and interests. The characteristics are:
Playing and Exploring
Creating and Thinking Critically
We also promote British Values in the Early Years in line with Government guidance.
Our curriculum is delivered in a variety of ways including child initiated learning, adult led learning and play based learning. Children have access to high quality indoor and outdoor environments which are carefully planned to ensure each child achieves their full potential. At the end of the Reception year, children are assessed against the ‘Early Learning Goals’ (ELGs) and are given a ‘Good Level of Development’ (GLD). Children who achieve the GLD are working at the ‘expected’ level against the ELGs or are ‘exceeding’ these levels. If you would like to find out more information about the Early Years Foundation Stage at Collingwood, please contact Mrs Hammond, Phase Lead, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
